Best white wine under £20
White wine under £20 is where the best value in the UK wine market currently lives. The duty and tax structure means that at £15–20 you are getting serious quality for the money — if you know where to look.
Picpoul de Pinet
Picpoul is one of the most reliable white wine buys in the UK under £15. From the Languedoc in southern France, it is crisp, citrusy, and high in acidity — perfectly suited to fish, seafood, and light summer dishes. At £10–14 it is exceptional value.
Grüner Veltliner from Austria
Austrian white wine is one of the most undervalued categories in the UK. Grüner Veltliner has a distinctive peppery, herbal character — dry, crisp, and refreshing with excellent acidity. A village-level Grüner at £15–18 will be more interesting and food-friendly than most Sauvignon Blanc at the same price.
Albariño from Galicia
Spanish Albariño has become widely available in the UK and at £12–18 it represents excellent value. It is aromatic, stone-fruited, and high in acidity — one of the best wines for seafood, particularly shellfish and white fish.
What to avoid under £20
Branded Pinot Grigio from large Italian producers. Most Chardonnay from supermarket own-brand ranges. Generic Sauvignon Blanc without a specific regional designation. These are wines built for volume, not quality — at this price point you can do much better.
